A large evergreen conifer with a straight trunk, horizontal branches arranged in rings, and a narrow columnar crown. The bark is grey, rough and thick with horizontal cracks. It is often confused with the Norfolk Island pine, a related species, and is widely planted as a landscape tree in the tropics.
